Hunter Buildings. The Inside. June 2010. www.hunterbuildings.com
All Eyes on Offshore On April 20, a well blowout and rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico killed several workers, breaking open a massive oil spill a mile below the Gulf's surface. No one is completely certain of the events that occurred the evening of the blast, but just like the Texas City refinery blast of 2005, this explosion will transform offshore safety forever. The 2005 refinery blast was a true game-changer, leading to extensive changes in recommended practices throughout the industry--revolutionizing plant facility safety and the blast-resistant building marketplace for many years to come. Founded just six years prior, Hunter Buildings was ready for the modifications and alterations in industry practices.
While blast-resistant buildings may be deemed new to land-based plant facilities, steel-fabricated buildings actually have deep roots in offshore oil and gas production. For more than 50 years, steel-fabricated buildings have provided safety from hurricane-force winds and fire. The question now is how will the oil rig blast influence offshore safety standards? Will more strict building standards be put into place for offshore facilities? For now, these questions remain unanswered, but we guarantee Hunter Buildings will be at the forefront of the offshore blast-resistant building industry--ready to keep our customers protected from the outside in.
